Many programs include assessments to evaluate the knowledges letter names. There are many activities for Letter Identification. Sing a Song
Sometimes parents think their children know the alphabet because they can sing the alphabet song. When you listen to them sing the song it can give you information on to what letters they really know the name of and which ones they have no idea about. It is good practice to have your children sing the song as well as recite this song slowly which makes them pay more attention to the names of the letters.
Children should be assessed in their letter identification at the beginning of the year, the middle of the year and the end of the year. This will be a good way for teachers to show growth and for children to see how much they have improved. If you have a child that cannot master the names of the letters after direct instruction then you know that you have a problem. The earlier you identify the problem the earlier that child can be helped to become a reader in the future.
